Happy National Volunteer Week! 👏

National Volunteer Week (May 15 – 21) recognises the invaluable support that Aussie volunteers deliver to their communities.

This year’s theme is 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒓𝒔. Volunteers with The Corps are changing the way we respond to natural hazards by proactively participating in preparedness and resilience building activities.

Collectively we are shifting behaviour and building a culture where strengthening our resilience is second nature to Australians.

We recently hosted three musters in Millgrove, Victoria, supporting one of Australia’s most disaster-prone communities prepare for future bushfires. We sat down with some of our volunteers to chat about what inspires them to roll up their sleeves and why giving back to the community is so important to them.

The closure of The Sands Recreational Area has meant locals have not had access to use the space for fitness, recreation, and mental health.

But we can change that!

Sign up to volunteer with The Corps. Activities include planting up to 3,000 flood resistant trees and shrubs to reduce further erosion in and around the recreation area. 🌳

✨ MILLGROVE MUSTERS ✨

In case you missed it, The Australian Resilience Corps launched our 2023 musters in Millgrove, Victoria.

With the help of our volunteers, we cleared overgrowth, removing fuel loads around critical infrastructure, including the bridge into Millgrove.

Their achievements:
🌱 Cleared 5000㎡ of land. Creating a wider, safer and more inclusive walkway by laying gravel and natural edging.
🌱 Completed 750m of the 1.2km track with three new evacuation exits.
🌱 Created 15 wood burn piles.
🌱 12m³ of fuel load cleared.

You too can help prepare and protect our nation against fires and floods in the off season. We have upcoming musters across Australia!

Give a helping hand to those who need it. 🤝

Together let's help residents in the bushfire prone Blue Mountains, NSW prepare their properties against bushfire hazards.

How will we do this? By removing overgrown vegetation, clearing gutters and other flammable material, blocking ember entry points and cutting overhanging branches, to reduce bushfire risk for the community.

We have FOUR upcoming musters in the Blue Mountains, NSW:

🌿 Monday, May 22, 2023
🌿 Tuesday, May 23, 2023
🌿 Wednesday, May 24, 2023

Come and help residents of one of the country's most disaster-prone communities Millgrove, Victoria.

The Yarra River (Birrarung) is utilised as a recreation space used for swimming, paddling, canoeing, fishing, meditation and so much more. 🏊‍♂️ 🚣‍♀️ 🧘

Despite being an area for the community to gather and enjoy, it is overwhelmed with high fuel loads (weeds) exposing the community to bushfire risk. There are no clear or constructed exits to the main road, should there be an extreme weather event.

We must take action.

Did you know, wildfires emitted 1.76 billion tonnes of carbon globally in 2021? That's equivalent to more than double Germany's annual CO2 emissions. 😔

More specifically, extreme bushfires that blazed across Australia during the Black Summer Bushfires 2019-20 released 715 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air. 🔥

Bushfires can affect our lives, homes, economy and environment.

The Corps is a volunteer network, working to help reduce the devastation caused by fires and floods across Australia. We host bushfire and flood preparation and resilience building muster events in communities that need it the most. We'd love for you to join us at one of our upcoming Muster events, register in the link in our bio!
