With only the first three months of 2023 under our belt, weโ€™ve already seen flood, storms, heatwaves, and bushfires wreak havoc across Australia. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ”ฅ

These extreme climate events are unfortunately made worse by climate change. To put things into perspective, in the four years since the 2019-2020 Black Summer Bushfires 80% of local council areas have been disaster declared. ๐Ÿš๏ธ

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by this, but there is something you can do. Our free online modules walk you through how to prepare yourselves, community, and property. Plus, when you volunteer with the Corps, youโ€™ll participate in activities to reduce the impact of natural disasters.

Did you know that every dollar spent on disaster risk reduction and prevention can save up to $11 in recovery costs? ๐Ÿ’ฐ

The economic pressures of natural disasters are expected to continue into 2023, but we can work towards reducing the cost of recovery efforts by preparing our communities and landscapes in the off season.

We can all do our bit by rolling up our sleeves and volunteering some time to making Australia more disaster resilient.

Itโ€™s no secret that volunteering has declined, at a time when volunteers are needed more than ever.

But what if volunteering can be your contribution to helping communities adapt to a changing climate? Would you reconsider?

In Australia, efforts are often focused on recovery. Itโ€™s time we shift our thinking. Building resilience and preparedness is equally important, as natural disasters become more frequent and severe.โ€ฏ

We are determined to shift behaviour and build a culture where resilience is second nature to Australians.โ€ฏโ€ฏ

How are we doing this? Through online resilience training, community-led resilience planning and coordinated volunteer activities.

Habitat destruction, introduced pests and climate change are unfortunately taking a toll on Australian species. ๐Ÿ˜”

By 2021 there were more than 1,700 species and ecological communities known to be at risk of extinction.

To address the decline of biodiversity, we need to reduce the threats and build resilience in our landscapes.

Australia has been dominated by La Niรฑa for the past three years. ๐ŸŒง Whist many parts of the nation have experienced extreme flooding, things might be about to flip into hotter and drier conditions. โ˜€๏ธ

At the end of January, the Bureau of Meteorology shared that we would experience a shift from La Niรฑa to neutral in February. While there is still some uncertainty about the climate moving to El Niรฑo later this year, modelling shows that temperatures are moving in an upward trajectory. โฌ†๏ธ

So, what does this mean for us? It means we need to prepare for the potential of bushfires, heatwaves and drought. Why? Because consecutive La Niรฑa seasons have seen strong vegetation growth, causing increase fuel loads for fires. ๐ŸŒฟ

The Australian Resilience Corps is a network of volunteers, NGOs, communities and corporates, determined to reduce the devastation caused by fire and flood across Australia.

The time to act is in the off-season. If youโ€™re looking to reduce the impact of bushfires before they occur, sign up to volunteer with the Australian Resilience Corps today!

Australia is the land of extreme weather conditions. Some parts can reach temperatures in the top 40C, whilst others below freezing.

2019 was our warmest and driest year on record, seeing a catastrophic bushfire season. โ˜€๏ธ

The 2019-20 bushfire season led to over 24 million hectares of land being burnt and the deaths of 33 people. The economic costs of this event were estimated at over $100 billion to the Australian economy.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe. The Corps is growing the largest on-call resource of disaster resilience volunteers to help communities prepare for fire and floods before they occur.

When youโ€™re buying a house there are many aspects to consider and disaster resilience might not be one of them. ๐Ÿ

While your property might not be built to withstand natural hazards, there are steps you can and should take to make sure your home is as resilient as possible.

What can you do:
๐Ÿ›  If your property was made before 1980, consider a roof upgrade. Why? These buildings were constructed before building codes were introduced.
๐Ÿ›  Increase floor height to improve protection from floods.
๐Ÿ›  Purchase a wind-resistant garage door, water tanks and a portable pump so you have access to water if youโ€™re cut off.
๐Ÿ›  If you renovate or upgrade your property, contact your insurance company to discuss what youโ€™re insured for as the value of your property might have increased.
๐Ÿ›  If youโ€™re buying new property, think about going above the minimum building standard to reduce the future financial impact of extreme weather events.
