📣 A huge shout out to our 2023 Corps volunteers, you are AH-MAH-ZING! 👏🏽🎉💃

Since April this year, our incredible volunteers have rallied together across 25 musters in multiple states (including NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and WA) donating nearly 4,000 volunteer hours to collectively empower and uplift communities that are vulnerable to fires and floods.

Together, we have removed a whopping 134 20ft shipping containers worth of green waste and planted nearly 6000 plants and shrubs. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without our wonderful corporate and tertiary partners who provide us with their volunteers. Thank you to the awesome businesses and Universities around the country that offer our volunteering opportunities to their staff and students: IAG @nrmainsurance and @minderoofoundation (the Founding Partners of The Corps), @aecom, @atlassian, @google, @kpmgaustralia, @mcsaatchiaunz, RenaissanceRe, ResilientCo, @rmwilliams, @stantec, Tattarang, @worldline, @uni_newcastle and @universityofthesunshinecoast.

This season’s musters would not have been possible without our wonderful NGO partners to help supervise and keep all our volunteers safe: Connecting Communities Australia, @gympielandcare, @habitataustralia and @treesforlifesa.

Enormous amounts of gratitude to the local volunteers, local councils and community groups that joined us at our musters to work side-by-side to create community resilience together, whether on the tools, feeding our volunteers or sitting down for a yarn. Special thanks to @rotaryaustralia, Millgrove Residents Action Group, Parky Care and the Wooroloo Community Team.

As we reflect on the past year, we're filled with hope that our collective actions have made our communities safer as we approach the summer months.

This week, our incredible volunteers joined forces to protect the Pindimar community from the looming bushfire season by creating a safe refuge of last resort for both locals and visitors, as well as clearing fire breaks behind homes. 🔥 🌳 🏡

Over three days, volunteers worked in the Mid Coast, contributing a combined 392 volunteer hours to bushfire resilience. We provided much needed help by clearing the equivalent of over ten, 20ft containers of green waste – what an incredible effort! 💪🏽 👊

Volunteers are the real superheroes, lifting the resilience of the Central Coast community! 🦸‍♂️💪

It's been almost a year since the Natural Disaster Declaration after the wild weather and floods of late 2022, and our amazing volunteers are making waves of positive impact! 🌊🌟

This week, volunteers from The Corps provided much needed help to the local Long Jetty and Shelly Beach communities. Together, we removed 1500 square metres of bitou bush in the sand dunes, planted 1200 saltmarsh species to regenerate an endangered salt marsh community, mulched and removed an assortment of weeds.

Volunteers generously donated a collective 336 hours! A big thank you to all our volunteers including those from IAG, @rmwilliams @nrmainsurance, @uni_newcastle, @atlassian and @mcsaatchiaunz.

The alarming rise in wildfires globally can be directly attributed to the far-reaching effects of climate change. 🌏 🌡

Last month, the Bureau of Meteorology placed Australia on El Niño alert, warning there is now a 70% chance of the climate system developing before the end of this year. ☀️

Back to back La Niña seasons have seen strong vegetation growth, causing an increase in fuel loads for fires ⬆🌿 . As our planet experiences shifting weather patterns, we can expect escalating temperatures and the conditions for bushfires to become increasingly favourable.

This poses significant threats to both human lives and natural landscapes.
Urgent action to mitigate impact is essential.

Volunteers are lifting the resilience of the Yellow Rock community, 10 years on from the relentless onslaught of devastating bushfires in 2013.

Last week, volunteers from The Corps provided much needed help to the local
Girl Guides by building an Asset Protection Zone. They achieved this by removing fuel load to protect their hall and adjoining campsite from future fires. The Girl Guides had lost their original hall in 2001 and an additional building in 2013, so this work was timely and essential.

Together volunteers donated a collective 105 hours to remove 15 trailer loads of green vegetation. That's equivalent of 3 shipping containers! 🍃 🌱 🍂

The 2019/2020 Wooroloo bushfire had a devastating impact on the affected communities and the surrounding environment. 😞

It consumed over 10,500 hectares of land, including dense forests, farmland, and residential areas. The fire destroyed around 86 homes, displacing numerous families and causing significant emotional and financial distress. Tragically, thousands of livestock and native animals also perished in the flames. The bushfire generated immense smoke and ash, leading to hazardous air quality and posing health risks for the residents in the vicinity.

The Wooroloo bushfire serves as a somber reminder of the destructive nature of bushfires and the importance of building greater resilience, community support, and effective fire preparedness strategies in minimising their impact.

Volunteers from the Corps have returned for a second time to lend a helping hand to the community, by participating in bushfire preparedness activities.

The impact of the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires on the Blue Mountains region of Australia was profound, leaving a lasting imprint on both the environment and the local communities. 🍂 🏚 🐨

The fires wreaked havoc, with almost 80% of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area affected by the inferno. 🔥

The Corps is continuing its efforts by hosting muster events in the area, where volunteers can help local residents who need assistance preparing their homes for the upcoming bushfire season.

By undertaking regular fuel load clearing efforts, communities can enhance their resilience against bushfires and potentially save lives and minimise the destruction of natural ecosystems and property.
